A Message From the Merger Team

Sacred Heart Parish

Saint Patrick Parish

October 27, 2020

Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart and St. Patrick Parishes:

On June 13, 2020, after consulting with the parish leadership of our two parishes, Bishop Frank Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport, announced plans to begin a process that would merge us into one new parish in the first half of 2021. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a status report on the merger.

·        In terms of clergy personnel, Father David Leopold retired as pastor of Sacred Heart on August 31st and is now serving as spiritual director at St. John Fisher seminary. Father John Inserra began a three-month sabbatical on September 1st and will return to a new assignment in the diocese at the end of November. Father Peter Lenox, former pastor of Saint Joseph Parish in Norwalk and the newly appointed Episcopal Vicar for Liturgy and Worship for the diocese, began an additional temporary assignment on October 1st as parochial administrator at Sacred Heart to assist in bringing the merger to a successful completion. Lastly, Father Joe Cervero, currently pastor at Saint Patrick Parish, will retain that position and will become the pastor of the consolidated Sacred Heart-Saint Patrick Parish at the completion of the merger. (At the present time, the appointment of a second priest for the newly merged parish is unlikely. Father Cervero will be assisted by other area priests for masses, confession, etc.) Deacon Peter Kuhn of Saint Joseph Church in Brookfield, is assisting Bishop Frank in facilitating the merger.

·        A Collaborative Committee made up of the lay leadership of the two parishes has been formed and has met twice to date. Members of the Collaborative Committee also serve on three subcommittees: Finance and Budget, Liturgy and Parish Life, and Religious Education.

·        Most importantly, the Collaborative Committee met last week on October 22 in the Sacred Heart parish hall. At that meeting, Father Lenox and Father Cervero advised the Committee that Bishop Frank has asked that the completion date of the merger be moved up from June 30, 2021 to January 31, 2021.

The principle reason for this accelerated timetable is financial in nature. Both Sacred Heart and Saint Patrick parishes are facing significant financial difficulties and have been unable to meet their obligations to the Diocese for an extended period of time. That situation has worsened over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and is projected to decline even further with each passing month. Clearly, the sooner the churches can be brought together into one entity, the sooner the negative financial position can be addressed. Among the topics to be discussed over the coming weeks are the consolidation of the parish staffs and the potential opportunity for generating revenue by renting or leasing space on the two parish properties.

At the present moment, it is fair to say that there are more questions than answers. We are confident, however, that our troubles can and will be resolved and that our consolidated parish will emerge with renewed financial health and a stronger foundation on which to build the future of the Catholic Church in our local communities.

Our pledge is to keep you fully and frequently informed as the merger process moves forward. In the interim, please pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide and inspire our clergy, our Committees and all who are involved in this vitally important initiative.

In the Peace of Christ,

                 Father Joe Cervero
